Post the forgettable U, Me Aur Hum, Ajay Devgn is donning the directorial chair after a long gap for Shivaay which he said is his dream child. While the actor chose to mount his story on his huge canvas, he missed out the fact that such a tale of epic proportions need strong brushstrokes of narration and vivid colors of emotions to create a huge impact.

Shivaay scores high when it comes to visual presentations but lacks a huge chunk of emotional connect leaving you unnsatiated in the end. Having said that, one must appreciate the fact that with Shivaay Ajay has indeed come a long way as a filmmaker after his first Bollywood directorial.

Ajay Devgn shines as Shivaay and gets to be a true-blue desi superhero. However his romance with Erika Kaar is as thanda as the snow-capped, icy mountains shown in the film.

Verdict:

Watch Shivaay only if you are a sucker for action scenes and don't mind spending huge bucks to witness a scene in the film where a random girl describes Ajay's character as 'hot and sexy' to Erika!
The story of Shivaay has more meanders than the river Nile. It starts off in the Himalayas, reaches half the world away in Bulgaria. While the location shifts only a few thousand miles, events in the story are light years away from any sense or logic.

Ajay Devgn throws in his lot with the film. He acts well, tries to emote through his eyes. Erika, Sayyesha, Abigail all are fine in their characters. But at the end of the day, you are SO not bothered about the protagonist or moved by his plight that all you want to do is take a nap. And the runtime of the film is conducive to the overall atmosphere inside the theatre: doze off. At 2 hours 52 minutes... you know this sentence is not going to end well.

Watch Shivaay if you have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE TO DO. Else watch a documentary on mountaineering. Or child trafficking. Or Bulgaria. Or whatever you want to.
Ajay, however, is ace. As an actor, we mean. As a director, he hasn’t made much headway still. His action is worth ogling at and his intensity evokes hoots.

It is shameful how logic isn’t one of the things Ajay spared a thought for. Sample this – Someone screams Shivaay’s name from the foothills and he jumps from approximately 6000 feet and literally flies down in two minutes. Oh cinematic liberties. Oh self indulgence. Why do I smell Sanjay Leela Bhansali in Ajay’s film?

Performances are stable but the story is a let down. 172 minutes is a lot to bear some good butt kickin’. Ajay, hire some better writers next time and give the chillum a break!
Ajay Devgn’s last directorial U Me Aur Hum had bombed terribly. After years once again trying his hands at direction, the actor now comes up with Shivaay.

Sadly, even with his second film, Ajay’s script sense seems to have not improved. Shivaay has been co written by Sandeep Srivastava and Robin Bhatt. Partly, it is them that Devgn must blame for his film turning out to be a bore. First they rip off the basic premiss from Taken, then amp it up dollops of emotional melodrama on father-daughter relations. Unfortunately, they do not confluence well. There are many scenes in the film which are meant to be tear jerkers but due to bad writing, turn out hilarious.

Shivaay is an Ajay Devgn show all the way. He is literally there in every frame of the film. Although, he rarely gets a chance to show off his acting chops in the midst of all the action. While he seems better in the second half, his act in the love story seems a little childish.

Verdict:

Shivaay is an action drama that immense action but zero emotion. Strictly for Ajay Devgn fans because sitting through it for 2 hrs 40 min may be difficult for others.
